Each swim meet has a number of jobs that need to be done to make it successful. For any child signed up, at least one parent should sign up for a job that will last at least half of the meet. You will be able to sign up at the same time as the child signs up for the meet itself.
A training session for Clerk of the Course, Stroke and Turn, Starter, and Scoring is held every year prior to the first practice meet. See the Calendar page for date and location.
Clerk of the Course: If you like organizing and efficiency, this job is for you. The clerk of the course sorts all entries in time order, places the swimmers in heats, and supervises the rounding up and advancing of heats. This is a fast paced job in the shade!
Rounder Upper: This job assists the Clerk of the Course. You will hand out event cards to swimmers and place the swimmers in order on the heat benches. Occasionally, you may have to search for a lost swimmer. This is a great way to get to know the kids.
Heat Advancer: You are crucial to the meet running smoothly. This is another job that assists the clerk of the course. Each time a race is swum, you will send the next heat of swimmers to the starting blocks and advance remaining heats one bench forward. This is a front row job.
Starter: The starter announces and starts each race. You'll have a poolside seat and plenty of action.
Timer: Each lane needs three timers to run independent stopwatches and record swimmers' times. This is another poolside job, and you'll have plenty of company!
Runner: Runners are the link between the swimmers, the timers, and the scorers. This is the job for you if you'd like to get plenty of exercise while watching your kids swim from poolside.
Stroke and turn judge: If fairness is your name, this is your game. Stroke and turn judges make sure that the swimmers are using proper strokes, starts, and finishes. They keep the playing field level. This is a great way to learn more about the swimming strokes and racing techniques.
Sorting and Scoring: Here's a job that puts your math skills to work. You'll figure team scores, and you'll be the first to know who won the meet. Shade is provided.
Ribbons: This is the job that the swimmers appreciate most. You'll prepare ribbons at the Scoring table. Another shady job.
Snack Shack: You'll see all of the kids if you work at the snack shack. This is the only indoor job, and it is a terrific fund raiser for the Manta Rays.
Check In: This is for early risers, and your work will be done by the time the action begins. You're needed to help all of the swimmers check in for the events they entered, and write their event numbers on the backs of their hands. 7:45 to 9 a.m. shift.
